It was a day of tragedy in Benue state, north central Nigeria as no fewer than 40 persons including mourners and market women died in a boat mishap in the state
Witnesses said that the boat was conveying the women and some to market when suddenly it went down on the Katsina-Ala River at Abuku/Buruku harbour in Benue State.
A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the incident occurred on Wednesday, at about 7pm.
It was learnt that the some persons were yet to be accounted or after the incident, among whom were some mourner from Gonduzua Village, Logo Local Government Area of the state were on their way to a burial ceremony in Buruku, a neighbouring local government area.
The boat was also said to be conveying market women, who were closing from Ugba Market in the same Logo local government area.
It was learnt also that some unconfirmed number of motorcycles and their riders were part of those who may have drown in the incident, especially as locals said no single body had been recovered from the river.
When contacted, police spokesman for the state,Mr. Moses Yamu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police confirmed the report but added that 13 persons and 18 motorcycles were lost in the mishap.
“13 persons and 18 motorcycles were lost in a boat mishap while crossing river Buruku from Abuku heading to Buruku town on 24/10/28 at about 2030hrs.
“Three corpses have so far been recovered and deposited at the hospital meanwhile, CP. Ene okon has ordered immediate investigation into the cause of the unfortunate incident,” Yamu said.
