Explosion rocks Enugu Catholic Church

Barely one month after a Catholic Church in Benue came under attack by gunmen, another Catholic church has been bombed in Enugu State, South East Nigeria.
The church identified as the Holy Cross Catholic parish, Iji-Nike in Enugu-East Local Government Area was bombed around 5:40 a.m on Sunday morning when the worshipers were gathering for Sunday mass.
The parish priest in-charge of the church, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Okwor told newsmen that the explosion occurred around 5:40 am when he was preparing for 6:00 am mass.
He said that the sound shook the church and that neighbours were confused while those in church scampered to safety.
The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Callistus Onaga described the incident as worrisome and called for vigilance.
He said though the explosion was minor as police described it, it would have caused stampede if it had exploded at the time the worshippers had filled church.
While he called on those behind this heinous act to desist Bishop Onaga urged government and security agencies to do something fast before it gets out of hand.
He said: “We have really going to beef up security around our churches. Father has told me how he is going to beef up security here. I have to talk to other priests around because you don’t know this kind of explosion that is happening indiscriminately from here to there where it will happen next.
“It is really disturbing that people cannot come to church now get relaxed and worship. This is the prove of it no matter how slight one look at it. If people where here, if this church is full as usual which this church would have been full in the next 10 -15 minutes it would have caused a lot of havoc.
“I call on the government and security agencies to look into this; one has happened in Ukehe, then another one at Idika Kalu’s house and now this one. It is coming gradually and our security should nip it on-board now it is small”, he warned.
