Nigeria’s national team coach, Gernot Rohr, has defended his call – ups for the crucial Russia 2018 FIFA world cup double header qualifiers against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on September 1 and 4 in Uyo and Younde respectively.
The list of invited players of the to the Super Eagles camp, which was released on Tuesday by the NFF had attracted some criticisms from stakeholders, who questioned the criteria for the invitation of certain players, based on their current forms and lack of playing times with their clubs.
Nigerians have raised questions on the exclusion of some players, who were supposed to be part of the list, based on their performance at their club.
But Rohr had cleared doubts about reports of favouritism or external influence in his selection of players for national team assignments, insisting that he is responsible for the monitoring and invitation of his players.
His words: ” How I select the players?. I monitor them, we have to see videos. I’m not the only one doing that, every coach in Africa is doing that. The Federation (NFF) don’t tell us who to pick. We pick the team ourselves
“I work freely. Nobody tells me how to work and that is very important for me. We will try to monitor the good players for future invitations to the team.”
