President of Nigeria’s Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Honor Sirawo has declared that the Super Eagles can still go beyond the group stage of the Russia 2018 tournament insisting that the duo of Iceland and Argentina are beatable.
Sirawo who spoke yesterday in Abuja said the loss to Croatia in the first match was a temporary setback which the Eagles can overcome depending on how Gernot Rohr and his back room staff manage the situation.
“That the Eagles lost to Croatia doesn’t mean it is the end of the road for Nigeria in Russia. Agreed, all of us would have loved to see the team make a good start, but they can still bounce back. Who says Iceland and Argentina are not beatable? In football, anything, just anything can happen and no two matches are the same. We can see that big countries like Brazil, Germany made a bad start, it doesn’t mean they are out.”
Continuing, Sirawo who is due in Russia on Thursday ahead of the Eagles, Iceland clash said what happens next would depend on how Rohr and his assistants re act.
“I expect the coach to rise to the occasion and find a solution to the team’s problem. He should face Iceland with a match plan that can produce result. If we adopt the right strategies, we can return to winning ways,” Sirawo said.
The SWAN boss stressed that the boys must show more commitment on the field of play, as they can not afford to disappoint Nigerians who are eager to see them do the country proud.
