Kalu, Ugwuanyi, Okowa congratulate Isiguzo, tasks NUJ to ensure welfare of members

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Saturday congratulated Mr Chris Isiguzo, the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Okowa, whose congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu in Asaba, called on Isiguzo to take the issues of members welfare seriously.
He expressed optimism that Isiguzo would make a difference in the task, given his wealth of experience and the positions he occupied in the profession.
The governor also urged Isiguzo to key into the desire of the people of Nigeria for real change and good governance and to lead the body of journalists to support the peoples wish.
Okowa assured the union of his support at all times.
He also commended the immediate past President of the union, Mr Waheed Odusile for his contributions to the development of the journalism while in office.
According to Okowa, the election of Chris Isiguzo as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists is not a surprise, following his antecedents as Vice President of NUJ, South East Zone.
He said: “His emergence at this time is significant and momentous in view of the fact that Nigerians are desirous to enthrone a true democratic change in the way they are being governed.
“The NUJ should strive to change the negative narrative on the issue of welfare of journalists seriously by ensuring better conditions of service and remuneration for working journalists and retired ones.
“If the welfare needs of journalists who are watchmen against corruption in society are well taken care of, they would be better disposed to playing the critical roles expected of them as agents of good governance and accountability.“
Similarly, former governor of Abia Orji Kalu has congratulated Mr Chris Isiguzo, the newly-elected President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Kalu who is the publisher of The Sun and New Telegraph titles, also extolled the virtues of the new president.
Kalu in a statement issued by Kunle Oyewumi, his Special Adviser, and made available to NAN on Friday in Abuja, stressed that the ethics of the media profession must be upheld by journalists for the sake of building a just and decent society.
Kalu described the new president of NUJ as a thoroughbred professional with a proven track record in journalism.
He said: “The election of Comrade Chris Isiguzo as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists did not come to me and many others as a surprise, following his antecedents as Vice President of NUJ, South East, Zone.
“The new helmsman has the intellectual and leadership capacity to steer the affairs of the body.
“I am convinced that Mr Isiguzo, alongside other executives of NUJ, will live up to expectations by taking the professional body to greater heights.
Also, Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has congratulated Comrade Chris Isiguzo on his emergence as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, through a peaceful and transparent election, which took place at the 6th Delegates’ Conference of the union, held in Abeokuta from Wednesday to Friday. Okeke, S-East science wizkid dedicates victory to Ugwuanyi Gov. Ugwuanyi also congratulated the newly elected National Vice President of the union in the South East geo-political zone, Comrade Petrus Somtoochukwu Obi, describing the duo’s victory as well deserved and an eloquent testimony to their diligence and merit in the journalism profession.
