Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, on Wednesday night regained freedom after six months in Kuje Prison.
Stepped out of the Kuje Correctional Centre, Kalu was received by his wife Mrs Ifunanya Uzor Kalu and many others including member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Ben Kalu; former member of the House of Representatives, Nnanna Uzor Kalu; former Chief of Staff, Abia State, Mr Mascot Uzor Kalu; a former Deputy Chief of Staff, Abia State, Dr. Maduka Ukaegbu, Kalu’s associate, Mr Obidigbo Enwezoh, among others.
The senator left the correctional centre’s premises in a black Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). He arrive his Aso Villa residence to behold supporters and well wishers.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Kalu and Ude Jones Udeogu, a former director of finance and account of Abia state on 36 counts of money laundering to the tune of N7.1 billion and they were jailed in December.
On May 8, the Supreme Court nullified the trial of Kalu’s co-convict.
The apex court held that Mohammed Idris, the trial judge who had been elevated to the court of appeal at the time of the case, ought not to have presided over the matter while he was an appeal court judge.
On Tuesday, a federal high court in Lagos ordered the release of Senator.
