It was a happy and joyful moment for the former governor of Anambra state, Dr Peter Obi when he was picked as running mate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the presidential election scheduled for February 2019.
A happy Peter Obi expressed joy that the road to Aso Rock for the PDP is completed with him coming on board. Indeed, the social media went agog and many commended the PDP for making it right again.
Osita Chidoka, former Corps Marshal of the FRSC said on his twitter handle that, “Nigeria- prayer answered is answered. HE VP @Atiku Abubakar has made the right choice in picking Peter Obi as his running mate. Atiku has just the exhibited the ability to make hard-headed decision required of purposeful leaders. Let’s get Nigeria working again. God bless Atiku.”
The deal to have the two-term governor of Anambra on a joint ticket with Abubakar for 2019 was reportedly sealed at a meeting in Abuja on Friday afternoon.
Gbenga Daniel, director-general of Abubakar’s campaign, who attended the meeting was also considered a running mate but the odds favoured Obi.
Already PDP members have been congratulating Peter Obi and a source who want not to be mention said: “It is true that Obi has been picked. The party will make the announcement soon. We don’t want to be too fast.”
Although a former Nigerian leader suggested picking the running mate from the south-west because of the voting population, Atiku ended up considering five candidates.
They are Obi; Ike Ekweremadu, who is currently deputy senate president; Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former minister of finance who is an Igbo from the south-south; Mustafa Chike-Obi, former MD of AMCON; and Osita Chidoka, former minister of aviation.
It was learnt that “Atiku said he would want a VP who would focus on the job rather than playing politics.”
