Barely 24 hours after the NFF electoral committee headed by Bar. Mohammed Sani Kalu released its electoral timetable, former Super Eagles manager, Chief Mike Umeh has urged those interested in running for the Presidency to forget it and allowed the incumbent Amaju Melvin Pinnick to do a second term at the Glass House.
Umeh who spoke in Lagos yesterday said no right thinking stakeholder who means well for Nigerian football would want to stop Pinnick from doing a second term, given what he (Pinnick) has achieved in the last four years.
In Umeh’s words:”The era of politics in our football is back ahead of the World Cup. My take is that we should just allow Pinnick to return and do a second term unopposed. The young man has done well in the last four years on all fronts. He has succeeded in making Nigeria a real giant in African and world football politics. Look at the position he holds today in both CAF and FIFA. He has not climbed to the top alone but carried several Nigerians along. Check out the number of our country men that are today in CAF and FIFA. We have never had it so good. I know how difficult it was for those before him to get into CAF. Small football fries from tiny Republic of Benin terrorized us and stopped us from getting into CAF before the coming of Pinnick. Look at what he has done in the area of marketing our football. Corporate bodies are now identifying with our football. Our teams have won several laurels since Pinnick and his team came on board and all these they have achieved despite the distractions that are coming from those who are hellbent on rocking the boat. So, for me, what genuine stakeholders should do is allow him consolidate on what he has started in the interest of Nigerian football.”
Umeh a former Anambra FA boss and board member of NFF said he sees the Eagles doing well in Russia insisting that the bunch of players Gernot Rohr has released are capable of shocking the world in Russia. He said a team that has been adequately prepared has no reason to fail.
“You can see that our build up to Russia is our very best preparation since we started going to the World Cup in 1994. The NFF came up with a wonderful program and many people thought they won’t be able to implement it. But you can see that they have so far implemented the program. Therefore to him whom much is given, much is expected. This is why I believe Rohr and his boys will deliver in Russia,” Umeh said.
