Nigerian ex -international, Waidi Akanni has commended Lagos State governor, Akinwumi Ambode for setting up eight viewing centres across the state where soccer fans are enjoying the Russia 2018 World Cup.
The viewing centres are being graced by Lagos based en -internationals who interact with the fans in an atmosphere that is spiced with music, food, drink and other side attractions.
The project tagged Mylagos Myfootball, is an initiative of Lagos State Sports Commission headed by the duo of Dr Kweku Tando and Tunde Bank-Anthony.
Akanni who is one of the soccer buffs driving the project said the idea of setting up the viewing centres has been a huge success.
“The crowd at the centres has been massive. It’s been keeping soccer fans busy and Lagosians are enjoying the Mundial under a cool setting where they interact with each other and do some networking. Lagos state governor Akinwumi Ambode deserves kudos over the project and I don’t think it should be a one off thing. I think the government should continue with the project during major international soccer tournaments like the Nations Cup and the FIFA youth competitions that Nigeria is involved in.”
On the Super Eagles performance at the World Cup, Akanni said it was not a bad outing in spite of the fact that Rohr and his boys may not have met the expectations of Nigerians.
“We were close to getting into the second round. The boys did put up a good fight against Argentina. I think we should build on what we have now rather than attacking the players and their handlers. We have a young side that would become very solid in the near future,” Akanni said.
