Akpabio negotiates move to APC, meets Buhari in London

The minority leader of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has met with President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of a reported plan to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former governor of Akwa Ibom is purportedly preparing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a few days.

He met with Buhari during the weekend in London, UK, where the president is currently on vacation.

Akpabio was said to have also met with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo earlier in the week.

Okoi Obono-Obla, senior special assistant to the president on prosecution, had said the PDP senator will be welcomed into the party on Thursday at a rally in Akwa Ibom.

The motive behind the anticipated defection is momentarily unclear, especially with the PDP laying claim to the majority in the upper legislative chamber.

The senator is, however, believed to be at loggerheads with Emmanuel Udom, his successor as Akwa Ibom governor.
