President of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Engr Musa Kida is literally on cloud nine over the successful run of both the D’Tigers and D’Tigress in the last one year.
For the first time in the history of Nigerian basketball both the male and female national teams qualified for the FIBA basketball World Cup, a feat which in the words of Kida is “a huge milestone for Nigeria.”
Kida at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday said Nigeria would not be going to World Cup to complete the numbers but to put up a decent performance.
He said the NBBF would do everything possible to ensure that both D’Tigers and D’Tigress do well at the biggest stage.
” I m extremely happy that we doing very well. This is the first time we have the male and female national team going to the World Cup. D’Tigers did so in style. We are the very first country to land in China even with four more games in hand. This is a huge milestone. We are going to consolidate on this. We are going to prepare D’Tigers very well for China, the same way we did to the girls who are right now in Spain. We will get our best hands to play for the country and we will strengthen the technical crew of D’Tigers…we would do whatever it takes to do well,” Kida said.
The NBBF boss said the success story of the FIBA qualifiers held in Lagos is also a big plus for Nigerian basketball.
“We have raised the bar in terms of infrastructure. FIBA is quite impressed with what we have done and in hosting the World Cup qualifiers we did not bring anybody from outside to get things up and running. It is Nigerians that packaged it ,” Kida said.
