Dalung tasks PTA to develop school sports facilities

Barrister Solomon Dalung has tasked various Parents/ Teachers Associations to join hands in the development of sports and sports facilities in secondary and primary schools.

The Minister of Youth and Sports gave the charge on Tuesday when he commissioned the Solomon Selcap Dalung Sports Complex located at JC Best Schools International at Life Camp, Abuja.

The complex comprising a volleyball court, a tennis court, a basketball court, a six-lane track and a football pitch was renovated by the Minister.

In his remarks, Barrister Dalung said that he intervened in the renovation of the the sports complex as his own modest contribution to sports development in the country.

“I have been championing a noble cause for state governments and the private sector to invest in youth and sports development in their states and communities. Charity, they say, begins at home and so I have decided to lead the way through this modest investment.

“If all of us sponsor such mini projects in our communities, then Nigeria will be a better place for youths to showcase their talents in sports, become self reliant and gainfully engaged.

“Therefore, I will continue to call on the private sector, state governments, local councils, individuals and stakeholders to contribute in their own modest way to sports development. It is also time for Parents /Teachers Associations to begin to work towards ensuring that every school in Nigeria has at least one sporting facility. It could be just a football pitch, a Table Tennis board or a Scrabble or Chess board,” Dalung said.

Earlier in her opening remarks, the Rector of the school Pastor Mrs Edna Kingsley Onuorah recalled the Minister’s first visit to the school at the school’s Inter house sports this year.

“He met with the Executive Management of the school and spoke on the importance of sports in a school setting and thereafter promised to intervene in our sports complex.

“It is on account of the Minister’s intervention that our sports arena is hereby netted and the basketball and volleyball courts re-surfaced. We now have what we call Solomon Selcap Dalung Sports Complex.”

The Minister later kicked off an inter-house football match while the students participated in 4x100m relays for boys and girls as well as demonstration games in volleyball and basketball.
