Herdsmen kill pregnant woman, 9 others in Plateau

…23 houses burnt

No fewer than 10 persons were alleged to have been hacked  to death on Tuesday,  by suspected Fulani herdsmen who swooped on  Hwra village in Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Among the dead was a nine-month-old pregnant woman

Witnesses told that the attackers  swooped on the village  in their numbers when the villagers were in their bed as a result of the total lock down imposed on the state to curb the novel coronavirus.

Following the attack the survivors,  mostly women and children have started  moving out of the community in drove for fear of further  attack.

President of the Irigwe Development Association, Hon. Sunday Abdu who confirmed the attacked said nine persons were killed including a pregnant woman.

He said the attackers burnt down the entire village including their  food stuffs and other valuables worth millions of naira.

His words:  “The attackers attacked the village and burnt the entire houses in their usual way when the people were sleeping as a result of the lockdown. 9 people were killed including a pregnant woman, and these people does not obey the laws of the land; we have outlaws in Nigeria.”

A community leader who was identified as  Moses Gata said Soldiers were withdrawn in Miango communities some few weeks ago after  the attackers dislodged four villages with dozens of people killed.

He confirmed that 23 houses were burnt with valuables worth millions of naira and called on Plateau people, especially Plateau State Government for urgent assistance to rehabilitate the devastated communities.

It was gathered that the deceased persons were mostly children and women who have been given a mass burial.

The Information Officer of the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven (OPHS), Major Ibrahim Shittu confirmed the attack and said the Commander, Major General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo and sectors Commanders in the area have addressed the villagers and moblised more men to curtail repeat of the ugly incident.

“Yes, the incident happened yesterday night, it was very unfortunate and when the incident occurred, we moblised our men to the scene immediately.

“As we speak, the Commander of Sector 3 who have been in the area and the Commander of the Operation Safe Haven, Major General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo have gone to the scene and addressed the people and assured them of more personnel to protect lives and property”

Major Shittu said he does not have the casualty figure as at the time of filling this report and said the Military personnel are working round the clock to fish out the perpetrators.
