How container crushed 5 on Sallah day in Lagos

It was a bloody celebration on Sallah day Wednesday as a 40 feet container fell off a truck at Alakija bus -stop area of Amuwo Odofin on the Lagos/ Badagry Expressway and  killed three commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) and two of their passengers.


Witnesses told that the trailer with the registration number KRD526XP was enroute Bada­gry when he ran into a commercial  bus EPE972XH.

The dead have since been deposited in a morgue, while the injured have been evacuated to a near­by hospital .

A witness who was identified as Jubril Omolade, told journalists that,  “Five persons died in this incident,  I am an Okada rider, We were waiting for passengers at the bus-stop when the trailer rammed into a bus at the bus stop. I think the driver and the conductor had gone to eat, so, there was no passenger in the bus. The container on the truck fell off and killed three of our men and two passenger who were try­ing to board an Okada. One of my friends, Wasiu sustained serious leg injury”

Confirming the incident, General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akin­dele, said the agency deployed heavy duty equipment to remove the fallen container and the bus off the road.

He said: “The agency’s Emergency Response Team at Cappa in conjunction with the Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, LASEMA officials, FRSC, LASAMBUS and officials of the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company, CCECC were involved in the recovery operation.
“The commercial mini-van and seven commercial motorcycles (Okada) were badly damaged as a result of the accident. Five persons were involved in the accident. This comprises three dead male adults while two persons sustained severe injuries and had been taken to the hospital for treatment.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dolapo Badmos, said the force was investigating.
