The sacked Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Babatunde Fowler had earlier reapplied for his tenure to be renewed but was turned down.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday approved the exit of Babatunde Fowler as the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.
Mr Fowler’s tenure as FIRS chairman expired Monday and the president could have appointed him for a second term in office.
In a letter to the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Fowler had requested for a tenure renewal in line with FIRS establishment act 2007 and that the renewal will enable him consolidate on the achievement of the last four years.
Rather than approve the renewal, President Buhari on Monday asked him to hand over to the most senior director in the outgoing board of the revenue agency.
Buhari also named Muhammad Nami, a tax consultant, as the new chairman of the tax commission.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the president also announced the constitution of a new board for the FIRS.
In a statement on Monday, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity said Nami is a tax, accounting and management professional with three decades of practical working experience in auditing, tax management and advisory and management services.
“He is an expert in rendering advisory support services to investors in respect of new business start-ups and management of existing businesses. He has also continuously rendered outsourced services to clients in trading, service and manufacturing sectors of the nation’s economy,” the statement read.
Muhammad Nami attended Bayero University Kano and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology (1991) and a masters of business degree (2004) respectively.
He is a fellow of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Institute of Debt Recovery Practitioners of Nigeria and Associate Member of Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.
He started his career with PFK in 1993 and rose to the position of a senior consultant in charge of tax management and advisory services.
