Police arrest suspected kidnappers of Lagos fire chief

Operatives of the Nigeria Police,  Lagos State  Command have arrested two suspected kidnappers, Blessing Bayo and Smart Alfred, for allegedly abducting the state’s fire service boss, Rasaki Musibau, and six others on Saturday.

This was after the state Police spokesman in Lagos, DSP Bala Elkana, had said in a statement that Musibau and the six other victims were released by their abductors around 11.45pm on Tuesday.

The other victims were identified as Mufutau Adams, Funmilayo Adelumo, Asiogu Martha, Lasisi Muka and two others, whose identities had yet to be confirmed.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Habib Aruna, had in a statement on Tuesday, allayed fears over the abduction, adding that the government had intensified efforts to rescue Musibau and the others from their abductors.

Elkana in a statement on Wednesday, said a well coordinated operation by men of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command led to the arrest of Bayo and Alfred, who had confessed to being part of the gang that perpetrated the crime.

He said, “Following a sustained and well-coordinated operation by the command’s tactical teams led by the officer in charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, SP Bulus Musa, two members of the kidnapping gang that abducted the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaki Musibau, and six others on Saturday, April 6, 2019, around 8pm, were arrested.

“The suspects namely, Blessing Bayo, 29, and Smart Alfred, 32, all of Arogbo, Ondo State, were arrested on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, around 5.30am at Ibafun, along the Ikorodu-Ijebu Ode Expressway, a boundary community with Ogun State, and they all confessed to committing the crime.

“Two single-barrelled guns were recovered from them. Investigation is ongoing and efforts are in place to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.”
